Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database, communities can create visual representations to categorize not at risk, susceptible, early, currently undergoing, and advanced gentrification areas. By using time-stamped data, which measure the change of a particular variable over time, communities may utilize data such as:

  • Type of business

  • Opening and closing of businesses

  • Duration of business

  • Business licenses

  • Land prices

  • Rent prices

  • Sales amount

  • Building type

  • Building age

  • Height

  • Floor area

  • Land use

  • Distance from public transportation

  • Building permits

  • Vacancy rates, etc.

With these data, the maps exhibit existing businesses, turnover, new locations, new developments, and neighborhood change to identify potential at-risk areas. If your community does not have GIS, please contact the Atlanta Regional Commission for assistance: Keri Stevens-404-455-4745 or kstevens@atlantaregional.org.
